Apple Inc. recently announced the successor to iOS 6 – iOS 7 at its WWDC, June 2013. The updated version of its operating system is going to be released to the users in Fall this year and consists of numerous features and functionalities such as AirDrop and multitasking, previously unseen at camp Apple (but not on its rivals like Android).
Let us take a look at the features brought forth by the tech giant this year for its users:
Complete overhaul of the OS
First things first. In true blue Apple style, iOS 7 features simple yet classy features. Additionally, it sports a new look and feel, which is evident from its icons, a translucent interface and much more. There is not a single unnecessary element be it a button or bar and it is more compact and intuitive for end-users.
Control Center is a one-swipe access to most frequented settings on your iOS device. For instance, it allows you to control Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, orientation or lock your device and manage some simple in-built apps such as flashlight and camera.
Today as the name suggests is an addition to the Notifications Center. It not only prompts you about your new mails, to-dos, reminders, missed call alerts, but also informs you about weather alerts, traffic information and everything that sums up a particular day. And that’s not all. It also gives you a quick glance at the next day’s events and activities.
Yes, it is finally here on the iOS platform! And like everything else, it seems that iOS 7 will take the cake with this feature and beat its rivals. Switching between apps is passé; iOS 7 lets you to use the apps and update the content even before launching them! Don’t get it? Well, if you have the habit of logging in to your favorite social media site right after waking up, then you will get all your feeds ready on your iPhone or iPad the first thing in the morning.
Looks like Apple finally has the answer to Android’s NFC. Use it to share apps, videos, photos or contacts with a simple tap on the ‘Share’ button and selecting the person with whom you want to share the data. All the received data are sorted in their respective places, which saves your time. There is no setup involved since it does everything using Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and that too in a highly secure manner. Moreover, you can choose whether to make yourself visible or not.
There’s more to Safari than ever. Now browsing is bigger and better with a ‘unified smart search’ field, (stays hidden till you scroll) which suggests the closest match when you type in a URL or a term in it. Also, to go back and forth a page, you just need to swipe and bingo! Even the tab view is new and it is effortless to scroll from tab to tab or to close a page.
With so many huge changes in the latest iOS, how can Siri be left behind? It now processes your queries better, includes search results from Bing and references from Wikipedia to answer your questions. Moreover, if you need to know the latest Tweets on a certain topic, you only need to ask, and Siri will search Twitter and get the results immediately. Easy peasy.
If you still haven’t got the hang of the panoramic view, you better do that and quick. Because here is something more from Apple’s doorstep! The Camera app in iOS 7 introduces two new shooting modes – front square and center square, provides new filters, new ways of grouping or organizing the images and much more. Want more? Tap the ‘Year’ view and you will get a montage of all your pics and videos taken during that year.
These are just some of the basketful of goodies that iOS 7 brings for Apple users. However, whether it truly manages to fill the gap or go a step ahead of its rivals, remains to be seen. So far, it looks every bit exciting and I can’t wait to get my hands on it this Fall!
